Cuatroteen skeletons were discovered on a boat this Tuesday, located around 10 nautical miles off the coast of Río San Juan, in the north of the Dominican Republic. The remains are believed to be of African origin, specifically from Senegal and Mauritania, based on the documents found near the bodies. Five individuals lost their lives when a boat capsized off the coast of Guacayanes, in the east of the Dominican Republic, as a group of unidentified people were heading to Puerto Rico illegally.
In addition to the skeletons, a backpack containing 12 packages of a suspicious substance, possibly cocaine or heroin, was found on the boat. The substance has been confiscated and handed over to the National Drug Control Directorate for further investigation. The bodies have not yet been retrieved, and they will remain on the site until the bags containing the remains are fumigated to prevent health risks. Once desinfected, they will be transported to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The boat was located after a local fisherman alerted authorities. The identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. The Dominican Navy has stated that they are working alongside other institutions to uncover the details of this tragic event.
