After a string of defeats, Tottenham sacked Nuno Espirito Santo as the team's manager on Monday. The Portuguese coach was subsequently replaced by Italian Antonio Conte, who took over as the Spurs boss on Tuesday.
The sacking of Nuno, who was only in charge for seven months, comes after Spurs lost two and drew one of their last four matches in the Premier League. The club's domestic form had also suffered since the Spurs had won their first two matches of the season, with their last win coming on September 24.
As a result, fans of the club were very quick to point the finger at Nuno, who has been vocal about the club's lack of summer spending on players. The 55-year-old's former assistant and close friend Paulo Fonseca was named as his successor and he will be at the helm for Spurs' midweek Europa League clash with Apollon Limassol on October 31.
Fonseca played alongside Nuno for Sporting CP and was in charge of the club for a short period between November and December 2014. He is a known supporter of Tottenham and also played for the club's rivals Chelsea.
Nuno Espirito Santo was previously with Southampton and Watford, but never managed a team in England. He has also coached several clubs in his native Portugal, such as Belenenses, Maritimo, Boavista, Porto, Vitoria Setubal and Rio Ave.
He signed a three-year deal with Spurs in July and is expected to earn around £4 million per year in his second spell with the club. Conte, who has agreed a two-year deal with the club, will also earn more than Nuno, but a precise amount has not yet been disclosed.
